Turkmenistan on Saturday introduced a snap presidential election for March 12 after autocrat chief Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov mentioned he was able to step down, along with his son anticipated to succeed him.
“The president … gave us an instruction to organize for early presidential elections on March 12,” a spokesman for the election fee, Bezergen Garrayev, advised AFP by phone.
Fuel-rich Turkmenistan, a former Soviet republic, is among the world’s most repressive, secretive states and little is understood about how the regime makes day-to-day choices.
Berdymukhamedov is its important face. His pastimes — together with horse driving, mass biking, composing songs and authoring books — are broadly lined on the web.
His 40-year-old son Serdar Berdymukhamedov is now the second strongest authorities official with a broad purview over the economic system as vice-premier.
In a keynote speech in parliament on Friday, Berdymukhamedov mentioned he reached “a troublesome choice” about his management due to his age, including that the Central Asian nation wanted “younger leaders”, the state data service TDH reported.
Berdymukhamedov, 64, mentioned the proposal to contain “youth” within the management of the nation had been “authorized” on the session, in additional quotes that appeared on TDH’s web site early on Saturday.
“On this regard, the Chairman of the Central Fee for holding elections and referendums was instructed to begin related work in accordance with the structure and laws of Turkmenistan.”
Berdymukhamedov mentioned he wished to stay in politics in his function as chairman of parliament’s higher chamber.
Friday’s session in parliament’s higher home marked the fifteenth anniversary of the primary of three crushing electoral victories for Berdymukhamedov in his profession as president.
He has by no means confronted an actual opponent at a poll and his regime tolerates no dissent.
A former dentist and well being minister, he succeeded the nation’s founding autocrat president Saparmurat Niyazov — styled Turkmenbashy, or Father of the Turkmen — when Niyazov died in December 2006.
