Turkmen leader’s son set to run for presidency – report

MOSCOW, Feb 14 (Reuters) – Serdar Berdymukhamedov, the son of Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, has confirmed he’ll be part of the race to switch his father in a presidential election set for March 12, Turkmen information web site Salamnews reported on Monday.

President Berdymukhamedov, 64, introduced on the weekend he was calling an early election. He stated he wouldn’t search one other time period after 15 years on the helm and needed to permit a youthful technology to take over.

His 40-year-old son, who’s presently a deputy prime minister, is extensively anticipated to succeed his father as president of the gas-rich Central Asian nation.

Serdar Berdymukhamedov was nominated by Turkmenistan’s ruling Democratic celebration, Salamnews reported.

His father, whose present time period had been attributable to expire in 2024, can be the prime minister of the previous Soviet republic and the speaker of the higher home of parliament. He has indicated he plans to retain the speaker place.
