VIENTIANE (Xinhua): Practically 1.7 million unexploded ordnance (UXO) objects had been destroyed by clearance groups in Laos from 1996 to Dec 31, 2021, whereas over 71,000 hectares of land have been cleared of munitions.
The figures have been launched at a session assembly on the Draft Unexploded Ordnance Nationwide Strategic Plan in Laos “Protected Path Ahead III” for 2021-2030, which came about in Lao capital Vientiane on Monday (Feb 28).
In response to the nationwide UXO database, from 1996 till Dec16, 2021, 71,943 hectares of land within the nation’s all 18 provincial areas have been cleared. Of this, 55,286.3 hectares have been agricultural land and 16,656.7 hectares have been land focused for improvement.
A complete of 1,693,487 UXO objects have been destroyed, of which 4,288 have been giant bombs, 968,447 have been bombies, 2,379 have been landmines and 718,367 have been different forms of unexploded ordnance.
In response to the Nationwide Regulatory Authority (NRA) for the UXO/Mine Motion Sector, since 1996 the main focus has been on UXO clearance within the 9 most closely impacted provinces of Laos, particularly Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Luang Prabang, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Champassak, Saravan, Xekong and Attapeu.
Over the previous 10 years, the NRA has carried out 18,862 Mine Danger Training actions.
