Connecticut welcomes hundreds of Afghan evacuees with open arms — and some with driver’s licenses

Technically, most should not refugees; state officers use the time period “evacuees.” A refugee is an alien who has been vetted and licensed by the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program as having skilled, or having a well-founded concern of, persecution on account of race, faith, nationality, membership in a selected social group, or political opinion. Nonetheless, the method is prolonged and sophisticated, taking as much as two years after acceptance into this system.
