Saudi Arabia pledged Thursday to launch 163 Houthi detainees in a transfer towards peace with war-torn Yemen.
Houthi rebels took over Yemen’s capital of Sana’a in 2014, sparking army battle between the Iran-backed Houthis and a Saudi-led coalition backing the Yemeni authorities.
The spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, Brig. Gen. Turki Al-Malki, launched an announcement to the state-run Saudi Press Company sharing the nation’s dedication to launch prisoners.
“The Joint Forces Command of the Coalition will launch (163) Houthi detainees who had participated in hostilities in opposition to the Kingdom as a humanitarian initiative in extension to earlier ones,” the assertion reads.
Al-Malki stated that the transfer was in “assist of all of the endeavors and efforts to result in peace and finish the Yemeni battle, along with supporting UN efforts to stabilize the present ceasefire, and create conducive efforts for dialogue between Yemeni events.”
Saudi Arabia has began releasing detainees and cooperating with the Worldwide Committee of the Crimson Cross to move them from Saudi Arabia to Sana’a, in line with Al-Malki.
He added that the initiative goals to finish “the PoW, Detainee and Martyr case in accordance to Islamic rules, inherent Arab values in addition to the Worldwide Humanitarian Legislation within the third Geneva Conference provisions that have been stalled ever since 2018 within the Stockholm Settlement.”
“Placing an finish to the prisoner change and martyr case is a precedence to the political and army leaderships, who’ve at all times reaffirmed that dealings in these instances needs to be purely undertaken in a humanitarian method, away from any political or army features and agendas,” the assertion added.
