TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian safety forces on Friday arrested a younger man following an assault on a high provincial cleric within the central metropolis of Isfahan, Iranian media reported. The cleric appeared unhurt in a video broadcast after the assault.
Based on the semiofficial Fars information company, the unidentified man accosted prayer chief Yousef Tababaeinejad as he was speaking with some worshipers after Friday prayers and tried to stab him within the neck with a “sharp metallic object.”
The report stated mosque guards shortly detained the him and added that the case is beneath investigation.
A video on Iranian media later confirmed Tababaeinejad talking to a reporter afterward and saying the assailant appeared to be a younger man, in his 20s.
Such assaults are unusual in Iran although within the early Nineteen Eighties, clerics have been focused by armed opposition teams, largely throughout or after Friday prayers. Over the previous months, there have been chants in opposition to clerics throughout protest gatherings in Iran over value hikes and the slashing of subsidies by the federal government.
In early April, a stabbing assault within the revered Imam Reza shrine within the northeastern metropolis of Mashhad killed three clerics — a uncommon act of violence on the main pilgrimage web site for Shiite Muslims.
Tababaeinejad, a hard-line cleric appointed by the nation’s Supreme Chief Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is named a vocal opponent of social media and music, saying they’re a part of the West’s software program struggle in opposition to Islamic beliefs.
