Pakistan on Thursday pulled out of the Chess Olympiad being held in Tamil Nadu, prompting India to hit out on the neighbouring nation for “politicising” the sporting occasion.
Hours after Pakistan introduced its withdrawal over the Olympiad’s torch relay passing via Jammu and Kashmir, Exterior Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated it was “extremely unlucky” that Pakistan has “politicised” the celebrated worldwide occasion.
Bagchi asserted that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh “have been, are, and can stay an integral a part of India.”
“It was the politicisation of the occasion,” Bagchi stated, referring to Pakistan’s resolution.
Pakistan was invited by the Worldwide Chess Federation (FIDE) to take part within the forty fourth Chess Olympiad being held in Mamallapuram close to Chennai from July 28 to August 10.
“Pakistani gamers will likely be leaving India tonight following their pullout of the occasion,” Olympiad director and All India Chess Federation (AICF) common secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan informed PTI.
“It’s stunning that Pakistan has abruptly taken the choice of not collaborating within the FIDE Chess Olympiad, notably after the group has already reachedV India,” Bagchi stated.
The spokesperson was responding to questions on Pakistan’s resolution to boycott the Olympiad, citing the torch relay of the occasion passing via Jammu and Kashmir.
“It’s extremely unlucky that Pakistan has politicised the celebrated worldwide occasion by making such statements and withdrawing its participation,” he stated.
Earlier within the day, Pakistan Overseas Ministry introduced its resolution to boycott the Olympiad.
“Pakistan condemns India’s mischievous try to combine politics with sports activities. As a protest, Pakistan has determined to not take part within the forty fourth Chess Olympiad and also will elevate the matter with the Worldwide Chess Federation on the highest degree,” it stated in an announcement.
To a separate query, Bagchi stated Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is a part of India and it rejects any remark that doesn’t “mirror this actuality”.
