Rehab Kanaan is a Palestinian poet dwelling in Gaza. Rehab has misplaced 54 members of her household (the Hamza household) throughout the Lebanon Tal al-Za’atar bloodbath, in 1976, and the Sabra and Shatila bloodbath, in 1982.
Rehab was born in 1954 in Lebanon after her household was expelled following the Nakba, the violent creation of Israel atop the ruins of Palestinian cities and villages in 1948.
Her household lived in a number of areas of Lebanon earlier than settling within the Tal al-Za’atar refugee camp in Beirut. In 1976, when the Lebanese Phalangist militias sieged the camp and stormed it, Rehab misplaced 51 relations, together with her father, her mom, 5 brothers, and three sisters.
Six years later, the Phalanges, underneath the command of the Israeli military, stormed the 2 refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila, killing over 3,000 Palestinians.
On that unhappy event, Rehab misplaced three extra relations, together with her son.
