Sweden’s Svante Paabo wins 2022 Nobel Prize in medicine

Sweden’s Svante Paabo was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medication on Monday “for his discoveries in regards to the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution,” kicking off per week of winner bulletins held beneath the shadow of the bloody struggle in Ukraine.

By his pioneering analysis, Paabo achieved “one thing seemingly unimaginable,” in keeping with the Nobel committee — sequencing the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of present-day people.
