BEIRUT – Britain stated on Friday it hoped a ruling by a Lebanese court docket to uphold the conviction of an Uber driver for the 2017 rape and homicide of a British lady in Lebanon would deliver closure for her household.
The British embassy stated in an announcement that Lebanon’s court docket of cassation rejected an attraction by Tariq Houshieh in opposition to his conviction which adopted his confession to raping and strangling 30-year-old Rebecca Dykes.
He was sentenced to dying in 2019, though Lebanon has an unofficial moratorium and has not carried out any executions since 2004, Human Rights Watch says.
“We hope this verdict will deliver some closure for Becky’s household, for the various around the globe who cherished Becky, and for all these whose lives she touched by means of her humanitarian work in Lebanon and elsewhere,” the embassy stated after the ruling.
Dykes labored on the embassy in Lebanon for Britain’s Division for Worldwide Growth.
