Over 180 hectares of forest land has been given to varied industries in Gujarat prior to now two years, of which 65.73 hectares was given to ArcelorMittal Group in Surat district, the state legislature was knowledgeable on Monday.

As of December 2022, the request for allocation of 196.9 hectares of further forest land at Hazira/Suvali to ArcelorMittal Group is pending, the federal government acknowledged. The federal government additionally mentioned the corporate gave 206.38 hectares of non-forest land in Bhuj taluka of Kutch and an extra Rs 6.93 crore for afforestation.
In a separate query requested by Congress MLA Amit Chavda, the federal government acknowledged that 180 hectares of forest land was allotted to industries in two years — 2021 and 2022. This allocation was given in response to 30 functions. The federal government obtained Rs 78.71 crore for the allotted forest land.
In a separate written reply, the federal government additionally acknowledged that as on December 2022, ArcelorMittal Nippon Metal Ltd has encroached upon 93.69 hectares of forest land in Surat district. On this land, the corporate has dumped metal slag, and constructed unlawful constructions, roads and gardens, the federal government acknowledged. Of the encroached land, solely 7.18 hectares have been cleared, it added.
