President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued an Extraordinary Gazette notification this night (Nov. 08) declaring the postal service as an important public service.
The Gazette has been issued by advantage of the powers vested within the President when it comes to Part 2 of the Important Public Providers Act, No. 61 of 1979.
Accordingly, the postal service has been declared to be an important public service contemplating it essential that the companies offered by any Public Company or Authorities Division or Native Authority or Co-operative Society or any department thereof being a Division or Company or Native Authority or Cooperative Society, which is engaged within the provision of the postal service, is crucial to the lifetime of the neighborhood and is more likely to be impeded or interrupted, the gazette states.
