In a big transfer to fight impunity within the nation, Lebanon’s Minister of Justice, Adel Nassar, has appointed a staff of judicial investigators to reopen and pursue instances of political assassinations which have haunted the nation for many years.
The appointed judges will deal with a few of Lebanon’s most infamous instances:
- Choose Sami Sader – The assassination of MP and Minister Pierre Amin Gemayel and Samir Shartouni
- Choose Yahya Ghaboura – The armed assault in Ehden, which killed MP Tony Frangieh, his household, and companions
- Choose Claude Ghanem – The assassination of MP and journalist Gebran Ghassan Tueni and his companions
- Choose Samer Lichaa – The assassination of journalist Samir Kassir
- Choose Samer Younes – The assassination of MP Antoine Ghanem and his companions
- Choose Fadi Sawan – The assassination of former Minister Elie Hobeika
- Choose Joseph Tamer – The tried assassination of former President Camille Chamoun
- Choose Amira Sabra – The assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Assaf
- Choose Kamal Nassar – The homicide of Sheikh Saleh al-Aridi in Baysour
- Choose Fadi Akiki – The tried assassination of Engineer Mustafa Maarouf Saad
- Choose Alaa Khatib – The clashes in Bourday, Baalbek
Minister Nassar emphasised that this step is a part of a broader effort to revive belief within the judicial system and be certain that no case of political violence stays unresolved.
The transfer comes amid ongoing public frustration over a long time of unresolved political crimes and the widespread notion of impunity in Lebanon. By formally appointing these judicial investigators, the Ministry of Justice goals to carry transparency, accountability, and, in the end, justice for victims and their households.
