Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra have registered a case towards Congress chief Ajay Rai for his “latka-jhatka” comment towards Union minister Smriti Irani, an official stated on Tuesday.

The Uttar Pradesh Congress chief on Monday took a jibe at Irani, saying she solely involves her constituency Amethi to point out “latkas” and “jhatkas”, an unflattering reference to bounce strikes that provoked a pointy response from the Bharatiya Janata Occasion.

The case has been registered below sections 354(A) (sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment), 501 (printing or engraving matter recognized to be defamatory), and 509 (phrase, gesture or act meant to insult the modesty of a lady) of the Indian Penal Code.
Requested if Gandhi will contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi, Rai had advised reporters, “It has been the seat of the Gandhi household. Rahul ji has been the Lok Sabha MP from there. So has been Rajiv (Gandhi) ji and Sanjay (Gandhi) ji, they usually have served it.”
“A lot of the factories in Amethi are on the verge of closure. Half of the factories in Jagdishpur industrial space are mendacity shut. Smriti Irani solely comes, reveals ‘latka-jhatka’, and leaves,” Rai, who’s a regional chief of the occasion, had stated.
At present, Amethi is represented in Lok Sabha by Union Minister for Girls and Little one Improvement Irani.
