Panamanian authorities on Thursday night detained the President of the Brazil-Palestine Institute (IBRASPAL) Ahmed Shehada at Tocumen Worldwide Airport and withdrew his Brazilian passport, Brazilian media reported.
Shehada was reportedly touring to Columbia to take part within the second convention for the Palestinian Union in Latin America, happening between March 17 and 19 in Barranquilla.
Brasil 247 reported that Shehada was questioned by Panamanian intelligence, who did not confiscate his cell phone.
In accordance with Brasil 247, ministers from the federal government of Brazilian President Lula da Silva requested the International Ministry to contact the Brazilian Embassy in Panama to acquire help for Shehada, who’s a Brazilian citizen.
Following these contacts, Panama determined to deport Shehada again to Brazil.

Vice President of IBRASPAL Sayid Marcos Tenório acknowledged that “the state of Panama is below American occupation. American and Israeli intelligence are focusing on anybody working in opposition to imperialist Zionist insurance policies.”
“Concentrating on Shehada by this state is an absurd measure that violates his rights as a Brazilian citizen of Palestinian origin,” Tenório added.
He pressured that Brazilian authorities ought to summon the Panamanian ambassador to ask for clarification over the detention of a Brazilian citizen.
In a press release, the Panamanian Committee in Solidarity with the Palestinian Individuals condemned Shehada’s detention. Many different Brazilian teams and organizations conveyed solidarity with Shehada.
