Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been declared the winner of the nation’s disputed presidential election with almost 98 p.c of the vote, after main rivals have been excluded from the race.

The ultimate end result introduced by the electoral fee on Saturday confirmed Hassan had received 97.66 p.c of Wednesday’s vote, dominating each constituency.

State media stated a swearing-in ceremony would occur afterward Saturday.

The election for president and parliament set off days of violent protests as demonstrators took to the streets of main cities to protest in opposition to the barring or prevention of Hassan’s principal rivals from working and what they described as widespread repression.

Regardless of a heavy safety presence, election day descended into chaos, with some demonstrators tearing down banners of Hassan and setting fireplace to authorities buildings and police firing teargas and gunshots, in response to stories citing witnesses.

Chadema, the primary opposition drive which was barred from collaborating within the election, advised the AFP information company on Friday that “round 700” folks had been killed, primarily based on figures gathered from a community checking hospitals and well being clinics.
