Beirut is getting ready for large crowds on Tuesday, Dec. 2, when Pope Leo will lead a public mass on the Beirut Waterfront at 10:30 am.

These are the detailed plans for highway closures, shuttles, and on-site providers to deal with what could possibly be greater than 150,000 attendees.

Street closures

Closures roll out in three levels beginning Monday, Dec. 1.

Stage 1 – Dec. 1, Monday night:

The complete Beirut Waterfront space is closed to autos and pedestrians.

Stage 2 – Dec. 2, Tuesday 12 am (midnight):

Shops, eating places, and cafes close to the Port entrance, Saifi, Annahar, Bab Idriss, Fakhreddine Avenue, and the Saint George Lodge will shut for the occasion.

Stage 3 – Dec. 2, Tuesday 4 am:

Closures prolong to areas close to the Emigrants’ Statue, Gemmayzeh Avenue, the Frères Faculty, Burj al-Ghazal, the Ring Bridge, Murr Tower, Vacation Inn and Abdel Nasser Mosque.


To assist crowds arrive, the freeway from the Port of Beirut to Fouad Chehab Stadium in Jounieh might be closed from 7:30 to 9:30 am on Dec. 2.

The half from Jal al-Dib to Fouad Shehab Stadium reopens beginning 9:00 am.

Drivers not attending the mass might be diverted at Nahr al-Kalb bridge and from the coastal highway towards Burj Hammoud.


Shuttles to and from the mass

Buses will use a color-coded sticker system displaying every bus’s area and villages:

  • North: yellow
  • Kesrouan: purple
  • Batroun and Jbeil: pink
  • Metn: blue
  • Beirut: inexperienced
  • South and Chouf: orange
  • Bekaa and Higher Chouf: purple

Martyrs’ Sq. will function the drop-off level for clergy.

Shuttles to mass

  • Kesrouan: Beirut Port parking zone close to the fish market
  • North: Parking zone behind Metropolis Mall, Dora
  • Chouf and Bekaa: Emile Lahoud freeway parking (in entrance of the Ministry of Vitality)
  • Jbeil and Batroun: Beirut Discussion board parking zone
  • Beirut: Horse racetrack parking zone
  • South: Sports activities Metropolis Stadium parking zone
  • Metn: Souk al-Ahad, Corniche of the river

Shuttles from mass to drop off factors for:

  • Kesrouan: Chafic Wazzan Avenue
  • North: Banks Avenue to Riad Solh Sq.
  • Chouf and Bekaa: Westbound Chafic Wazzan Avenue
  • Jbeil and Batroun: Street from Bechara al-Khoury to the Armenian church, right down to Martyrs’ Sq.
  • Beirut: Martyrs’ Sq. towards Bechara al-Khoury
  • South: Saint George Lodge, Place de l’Étoile and Ain al-Mreisseh
  • Metn: Georges Haddad Avenue
