In line with the Ministry of Defence, Challenge 17A frigates are versatile multi-mission platforms, designed to deal with present and future challenges within the maritime area.
Taragiri is a reincarnation of the erstwhile INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that was a part of the Indian Naval fleet from 16 Could 1980 to 27 Jun 2013, rendering 33 years of superb service to the nation. This state-of-the-art frigate displays a quantum leap in naval design, stealth, firepower, automation and survivability, and is an emblem of Aatmanirbharta in warship constructing, the Ministry famous.
Designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Workforce (Mumbai), P17A frigates mirror a generational leap in indigenous ship design, stealth, survivability, and fight functionality. Pushed by the philosophy of Built-in Development, the ship was constructed and delivered in envisaged timelines.
As per the Ministry of Defence, P17A ships are fitted with a sophisticated weapon and sensor suite in comparison with the P17 (Shivalik) class. These ships are configured with Mixed Diesel or Gasoline (CODOG) propulsion crops, comprising a diesel engine and a gasoline turbine that drive a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) on every shaft, and state-of-the-art Built-in Platform Administration System (IPMS).
The potent weapon and sensors suite contains BrahMos SSM, MFSTAR and MRSAM complicated, 76mm SRGM, and a mixture of 30 mm and 12.7 mm close-in weapon techniques, together with rockets and torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare.Taragiri is the fourth P17A ship to be delivered to Indian Navy within the final 11 months. The expertise gained from building of first two P17A ships have enabled the construct interval of Taragiri to be compressed to 81 months, compared to 93 months taken for First of the Class (Nilgiri). The remaining three ships of Challenge 17A (one in MDL and two in GRSE) are deliberate to be delivered progressively by Aug 2026, as per the Ministry.
Supply of Taragiri showcases the design, ship building and engineering prowess of the nation, and displays IN’s unrelenting concentrate on Aatmanirbharta in each ship design and shipbuilding. With an indigenisation content material of 75%, the undertaking has concerned over 200 MSMEs and has enabled employment era of roughly 4,000 personnel immediately and greater than 10,000 personnel not directly.
