India’s iconic shuttler Saina Nehwal has confirmed her retirement from aggressive badminton, saying that she will’t push it anymore. The 2012 Olympics bronze medallist, Nehwal, has not performed any official match for the reason that 2023 Singapore Open and has been out of motion as a consequence of a continual knee situation. 

“I had stopped taking part in two years again. I really felt that I entered the game alone phrases and left alone phrases, so there was no have to announce it,” Saina stated on a podcast. “If you’re not able to taking part in anymore, that’s it. It’s advantageous.”

She said that the degrading knee situation has compelled her to announce her retirement. “Your cartilage has completely degenerated, you have got arthritis, that is what my dad and mom wanted to know that, my coaches wanted to know that, and I simply informed them, ‘Now most likely I can not do it anymore, it’s troublesome’,” she stated.

The previous World No.1 said that she didn’t really feel the necessity to announce her retirement as her absence would imply the identical for her followers. 

“Slowly, individuals may also realise that Saina isn’t taking part in,” she stated.

The Olympic medallist stated her knees may not face up to even gentle coaching, making the choice—one she referred to as unavoidable—closing.

“I didn’t suppose it was such a giant matter to announce my retirement. I simply felt my time was up as a result of I couldn’t push a lot, that my knee isn’t in a position to push like earlier than,” she stated.

“You practice eight to 9 hours to be one of the best on the earth, now my knee was giving up in a single or two hours. It was swelling, and it grew to become very robust to push after that. So I believed it’s sufficient. I can’t push it anymore,” she added.

Saina’s profession was deeply affected by a career-threatening knee harm she suffered on the Rio 2016 Olympics. Whereas she mounted a powerful comeback – successful bronze on the 2017 World Championships and gold on the 2018 Commonwealth Video games – persistent knee issues continued to hinder her progress.

In 2024, she disclosed that she had developed arthritis in her knees and that vital cartilage put on had left her unable to coach on the depth demanded by elite competitors.
