Actual-time knowledge from soil sensors helps Okay-P farmers finish irrigation guesswork, saving water by 30%, reducing gas prices

PESHAWAR:

Farmers in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (Okay-P) are starting to save lots of important quantities of water and enhance agricultural productiveness with the assistance of contemporary soil moisture sensor expertise.

Consultants consider that scaling up such expertise throughout Okay-P might assist make agriculture extra resilient to local weather change whereas easing strain on Pakistan’s dwindling water assets. Early findings, based mostly on experiences from Punjab, point out substantial advantages.

The expertise, generally known as a soil water moisture sensor array, has been put in on the Tarnab Analysis Farm and in chosen farming areas of the province. 50 sensors have been put in in Charsadda district and 60 in Mansehra. The sensors present real-time knowledge to farmers, enabling them to irrigate crops solely when obligatory moderately than counting on guesswork or conventional schedules.

Talking to The Specific Tribune, Dr Gulzar Ahmed, Analysis Officer on the Pakistan Scientific Analysis Centre, mentioned the initiative is a joint effort with the Worldwide Water Administration Institute (IWMI). He defined that the sensor system works on three alerts, much like visitors lights, making it straightforward for farmers to grasp irrigation wants.

“The sensors are related to a cellular software that gives real-time knowledge. Farmers can examine soil moisture ranges from their properties and resolve whether or not their fields really need water,” he mentioned. This strategy not solely prevents over-irrigation but additionally helps preserve scarce water assets.

“This challenge goals to advertise water-related analysis and considerably scale back the quantity of water utilized in agriculture,” Dr Ahmad mentioned, including that consultations are additionally underway with worldwide water-saving establishments.

Kifayat Zaman, the challenge in cost in Okay-P, mentioned the initiative is a part of a UK-funded programme titled Water Assets Accountability in Pakistan. “The programme was launched in Punjab in 2021, whereas in Okay-P it started in 2024,” he mentioned.

“Farmers who beforehand irrigated their crops 4 to 6 instances throughout a season are actually doing so solely three to 4 instances,” Zaman mentioned. “This has resulted in water financial savings of 25 to 30 %”.

In line with Zaman, the soil moisture sensors are designed to enhance water demand evaluation, provide administration, and general governance within the water sector. “One of many core goals of this programme is to strengthen coordination amongst authorities establishments and enhance the general water administration system,” he added.

He burdened that local weather change and its impacts have gotten more and more seen for farmers throughout the province. “Erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and water shortages are instantly affecting agriculture. With the assistance of this expertise, farmers cannot solely optimise water use but additionally improve crop productiveness,” he mentioned.

Furthermore, analysis studies counsel that using these sensors has led to a 15 to twenty per cent improve in crop yields. The financial advantages are additionally important, notably for farmers who depend on tube wells powered by electrical energy or photo voltaic power. “These farmers confronted excessive operational prices, and the lowered want for irrigation has helped them save a substantial amount of cash,” Zaman mentioned.
