The Israeli bobsled staff’s historic journey to the 2026 Winter Olympics resulted in something however storybook vogue on Sunday, as Israel’s personal Olympic committee withdrew it from competitors after studying that the staff had lied a few member’s well being.

The withdrawal meant that Israel didn’t compete within the four-man race on Sunday, the ultimate day of competitors in Milan and Cortina.

After ending the primary two heats of the four-man bobsled race because the slowest staff, Israel deliberate to swap out Uri Zisman for staff alternate Ward Farwasy, who would have grow to be Israel’s first-ever Druze Olympian had he taken the ice.

However bobsled substitutions are solely permitted within the occasion of an athlete’s harm or sickness, so Zisman had agreed to lie and inform officers he was sick. He had reportedly obtained a medical certification for the false story.

In a press release, Israel’s Olympic committee mentioned it had discovered of the staff’s plan to substitute in Farwasy “in an improper method that doesn’t meet the requirements anticipated of Olympic athletes and isn’t in keeping with Olympic values,” and selected to withdraw the staff from the race.

“The Olympic Committee of Israel views any deviation from the Olympic values as unacceptable and can’t settle for inappropriate conduct,” the assertion mentioned. “It ought to be emphasised that, up up to now, the participation of the bobsleigh delegation has taken place within the spirit of sport and with none violations by the athletes.”

David Greaves, the president of the Israeli Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation, instructed the Occasions of Israel that he was “deeply disenchanted within the actions of the staff.”

AJ Edelman, the staff’s captain and foremost driver of its existence, took accountability for the scheme.

“I apologize profusely for the frustration,” Edelman posted on X. “However I’ll at all times stay proud that the staff checked out their Druze brother, who had earned his place on the staff, and unanimously mentioned ‘we wish this for you.’ I signed off on it and I take accountability.”

Later, keeping off criticism that he had compromised the very Olympic program he had sought to construct up, Edelman appeared accountable Zisman’s mom for calling foul on the swap and mentioned he didn’t remorse it.

“I make no apologies for the choice. In any respect. The swap is just not solely widespread in our sport, we did it believing it was good for the nation and to honor our teammate. We thought we have been placing nation first,” he wrote. “The top impact was not meant however I’m happy with the staff’s consensus in that second. It was solely a difficulty as a result of the mom of the athlete changed was upset it was her baby, not one other athlete. The choice itself was not in query and I stay okay with it.”

The disqualification ignited criticism of the staff from each pro-Israel sports activities followers and those that had protested Israel’s inclusion within the Olympics within the first place. Edelman and Menachem Chen’s last-place end within the two-man bobsled occasion final week was overshadowed by a Swiss broadcaster’s criticism of Israel and Edelman throughout the race.
