The Trump administration sued Harvard College on Friday, alleging that the varsity had failed to deal with antisemitism and discrimination towards Jewish and Israeli college students.

The lawsuit, which was filed by the Justice Division in Massachusetts District courtroom, marked a pointy escalation of the federal government’s yearlong battle with the college because it now seeks to freeze present grants to the varsity and demand compensation of all grants made since at the very least Oct. 7, 2023.

The 44-page lawsuit alleges that Jewish and Israeli college students on Harvard’s campus had been “harassed, bodily assaulted, stalked, and spat upon” and “repeatedly denied entry to instructional amenities by antisemitic demonstrators” following Oct. 7.

“Harvard’s response to this: do nothing,” the grievance reads. “Its school and management turned a blind eye to antisemitism and discrimination towards Jews and Israelis. College students and school violated Harvard’s time, place, and method guidelines with impunity; guidelines that Harvard has and would implement towards anybody else.”

Harvard confirmed in an announcement Friday that it might defend towards the lawsuit, writing that it was “yet one more pretextual and retaliatory motion by the administration for refusing to show over management of Harvard to the federal authorities.”

“Harvard cares deeply about members of our Jewish and Israeli neighborhood and stays dedicated to making sure they’re embraced, revered, and may thrive on our campus,” the spokesperson mentioned. “Harvard’s efforts exhibit the very reverse of deliberate indifference.”

The Nexus Challenge, an antisemitism watchdog group, condemned the lawsuit in a submit on X, writing that the Trump administration “continues to use legit Jewish considerations over antisemitism as a thinly veiled excuse to assault and bully main tutorial establishments.”

“This authoritarian abuse of energy doesn’t make Jewish college students safer, or mirror the suggestions of antisemitism specialists,” the submit continued.

The lawsuit comes days after the Harvard Jewish Alumni Alliance revealed a report that discovered Jewish undergraduate enrollment had dropped to 7%, a determine it mentioned was “the bottom degree recorded since earlier than World Battle II and the bottom of any Ivy League establishment with dependable knowledge.”

Final month, Harvard School’s dean of admissions and monetary support, William Fitzsimmons, introduced that the varsity had been working to recruit college students from Jewish day colleges, including that the outcomes of the hassle had been encouraging. (The college’s pledge was first reported by The Washington Free Beacon.)

The Trump administration’s newest salvo towards Harvard shortly follows one other lawsuit filed by the Justice Division final month towards UCLA, accusing its management of permitting an antisemitic work atmosphere to “flourish” on its campus.

Following the lawsuit, greater than 100 Jewish school and employees at UCLA signed onto a letter opposing the Trump administration’s claims towards the varsity.
