Rukmini, 19, turns away from the self-importance mirror after her make-up and hair has been accomplished by professionals, to face her mom. “Dulhan nahi, child doll lag rahi hu na? (I appear to be a doll, not a bride, proper?),” she says. Her mom laughs.
Rukmini is certainly one of 51 brides in a room saturated with tints and shades of purple. The brides take their turns to sit down in entrance of mirrors. They pin their lehengas securely, slip on their bangles, and reapply lipstick. One finish of the corridor in Zora Conference Centre on Delhi’s Lodhi Street is lined with self-importance mirrors, and on the opposite finish, the grooms line as much as stroll in direction of the principle ceremony corridor.
