The Joint Motion Committee (JAC), comprising Pakistan’s media consultant organisations — PBA, APNS, CPNE, AMEND, and PFUJ — has expressed deep concern over the present world scenario concerning freedom of expression and the protection of journalists.

In a joint assertion on the event of World Press Freedom Day, the media our bodies mentioned that the previous 12 months proved to be extraordinarily troublesome and difficult for journalism, throughout which restrictions and constraints have been imposed on the media not solely in creating international locations but additionally in developed nations.

In Pakistan, too, the state of freedom of expression has not been passable. The nation witnessed quite a few incidents of journalists being murdered, harassed, arrested in false circumstances, and subjected to violence.  

The assertion famous that in worldwide conflicts, significantly in Gaza, a number of journalists misplaced their lives whereas performing their skilled duties.

In Afghanistan, media freedom continues to face ongoing restrictions, whereas in battle zones reminiscent of Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, and Sudan, journalists have confronted extreme threats, assaults, and casualties.

In international locations like Russia, India, and Iran, journalists have additionally confronted stress, arrests, and censorship.

On this context, even in European international locations and the USA — which current themselves as main champions of democracy and freedom of expression — journalism faces challenges at varied ranges. Significantly in European international locations like Hungary and Poland, the scenario concerning media freedom and institutional autonomy has been alarming. 

In France, journalists confronted stress and obstacles whereas protecting protests and through tensions with safety companies.

In the USA, the strategy towards the media at excessive ranges, significantly on the governmental and presidential ranges, has been incomprehensible and reflective of an authoritarian mindset, creating an environment of uncertainty concerning free journalism.

Regardless of all these difficulties, the JAC mentioned that they pay tribute to journalists and media establishments world wide who made unparalleled sacrifices to offer information and maintain the general public knowledgeable, and who carried out their skilled duties with integrity.

“We reaffirm our dedication that our battle to guard freedom of expression, democratic values, and the general public’s proper to data will proceed,” learn the assertion.

Regardless of all opposed circumstances, the media our bodies mentioned that they’d proceed to fulfil their constitutional, authorized, and democratic position responsibly to advertise reality and transparency in society.
