TEL AVIV, Israel – France will host a world assembly in June devoted to the long-touted two-state answer to the Israeli-Palestinian battle, the French overseas minister introduced on Thursday.

“On September 22 final yr, France took the momentous resolution to acknowledge the State of Palestine and can host a world convention in Paris on June 12 in order that Israeli and Palestinian civil societies could make their voices heard,” Jean-Noel Barrot stated in a video message performed to a gathering of peace activists within the Israeli metropolis of Tel Aviv.

The “Folks’s Peace Summit” in Tel Aviv was organized by the “It’s Time” coalition, a grouping of greater than 80 peacebuilding organizations working to finish the Israeli-Palestinian battle by a political settlement guaranteeing each peoples’ proper to self-determination and safe lives.

A number of hundred folks attended the assembly in Tel Aviv, AFP journalists reported.

“Whereas the Center East stays deeply scarred by the terrorist assaults of October 7 (2023) in Israel, by greater than two and a half years of devastating battle in Gaza and by a humanitarian disaster that, sadly, exhibits no signal of abating, your presence right here is an act of resistance in opposition to fatalism and resignation,” Barrot stated.

Palestinian Islamist motion Hamas’s October 7, 2023 assault on Israel sparked the battle in Gaza, the place a ceasefire in impact since October has largely halted preventing.

Barrot’s remarks come as the federal government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, one of the vital right-wing in Israel’s historical past, vehemently opposes the emergence of a sovereign and absolutely unbiased Palestinian state within the occupied West Financial institution and Gaza, and is engaged on the bottom to undermine the potential of a two-state answer.

In the meantime, the Palestinian Authority led by president Mahmud Abbas seems extraordinarily weakened and deeply unpopular. /jpv
