Former Horana United Nationwide Social gathering (UNP) Municipal Councillor Renuka Damayanthi has been arrested by the Wattala Police over the alleged defrauding of six textile merchants in Pettah.
She is alleged to have deceived the merchants by issuing dishonoured cheques and defrauded them of almost Rs. 160 million.
Experiences point out that she had been avoiding the merchants for a while. Nonetheless, after receiving info that she had visited Sirikotha yesterday (18), the merchants went there to confront her.
A heated confrontation reportedly ensued between the merchants and the lady, following which the Mirihana Police took all these concerned into custody.
Throughout subsequent investigations by the Mirihana Police, the merchants formally lodged complaints towards her.
Accordingly, the Mirihana Police handed the suspect over to the Wattala Police.
The suspect was produced earlier than Appearing Wattala Justice of the Peace Meril Botheju at present (19), who ordered that she be remanded till 21 July.
