French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja has clinched the distinguished Chennai Grand Masters title, demonstrating strategic prowess by securing an important draw towards Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi within the last spherical.

Frenchman Alireza Firouzja was topped champion of the fourth version of Chennai Grand Masters after he performed out a draw towards Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi within the seventh and last spherical on Wednesday.

Firouzja completed with 4.5 factors after two wins and 5 attracts from seven rounds.

Firouzja, who had began the competitors with two consecutive wins, had gone into the ultimate spherical with half some extent benefit over his nearest rivals, Erigaisi and GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan.

 

Firouzja’s Path To Victory

In an try to push for a win with black items to attempt to declare the title, Abdusattorov misplaced to GM Dmitry Andreikin in 37 strikes.

This meant that Firouzja then wanted only a draw towards Erigaisi to seize the crown and he did simply that in 41 strikes along with his Indian opponent having little likelihood of turning the tables within the rook-pawn endgame.

The Frenchman will take house a prize purse of Rs 25 lakh (Rs 2.5 million) for his effort that noticed him win two matches and draw the subsequent 5.

Andreikin, who was the one unbeaten participant within the competitors other than Firouzja, completed with 4 factors together with Erigaisi. Abdusattorov together with GM Nihal Sarin and GM M Pranesh completed fourth with 3.5 factors.

World champion D Gukesh’s struggles continued as he misplaced three of his seven matches and completed final with 2 factors.

  • GM Nihal Sarin (3.5) drew with GM M Pranesh (3.5)
