A joint US-Russian crew safely returned to Earth on Sunday after spending greater than eight months aboard the Worldwide Area Station (ISS), marking one other milestone in continued area cooperation between Washington and Moscow regardless of broader geopolitical tensions.Nasa astronaut Chris Williams and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev landed aboard the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft within the steppes of Kazakhstan after finishing a 241-day mission in orbit. The Soyuz capsule touched down below parachutes in a delegated touchdown space southeast of Dzhezkazgan.

Following the touchdown, the crew was scheduled to journey by helicopter to Karaganda. From there, Williams will fly again to Nasa’s Johnson Area Centre in Houston, whereas Kud-Sverchkov and Mikaev will return to Russia’s Star Metropolis coaching base close to Moscow.

The mission was the primary spaceflight for Williams and Mikaev, whereas it marked Kud-Sverchkov’s second journey to area.

US-Russia area cooperation continues regardless of tensions

Though america and Russia had been fierce rivals through the Chilly Warfare-era area race, the 2 international locations have continued to collaborate on the Worldwide Area Station and different area programmes. That cooperation has continued even after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 strained diplomatic ties. Each international locations have continued to alternate crews, with American astronauts flying aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft and Russian cosmonauts travelling on US missions below a seat-swap association.Earlier this month, on July 14, Nasa astronaut Anil Menon and Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina arrived on the ISS for an eight-month mission after launching from the Russia-leased Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.Nasa administrator Jared Isaacman attended the launch, marking the primary go to by a Nasa chief to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in eight years. The newly arrived trio joined Nasa astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Area Company astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrei Fedyaev as a part of Expedition 75 aboard the orbiting laboratory.
