BEIJING — China carried out joint naval and air workouts close to the disputed Scarborough Shoal within the South China Sea on Saturday, as tensions with the Philippines over competing territorial claims proceed to rise.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that the drills, performed close to the shoal—referred to as Huangyan Island in China and Panatag Shoal within the Philippines—have been aimed toward testing the army’s functionality to coordinate air and maritime operations and quickly deploy reinforcements.
