A Rs. 15 billion flood-control mission in Kolonnawa will widen 4 principal canals and construct seven water-retention ponds to cut back recurring flooding in Kolonnawa and surrounding areas.
Minister of Transport, Highways and City Improvement Bimal Rathnayake and Deputy Minister of City Improvement Eranga Gunasekara inspected development work below the Kolonnawa Stormwater Drainage and Environmental Enchancment Particular Mission on September 23, 2026.
The mission is meant to extend the water-carrying capability of key canals and enhance stormwater administration in areas affected by common flooding.
Underneath the mission, the Selalihini Mawatha Canal, Dahamwela Canal, Passenna Canal and Danduthota Canal shall be widened and developed.
Seven water-retention ponds are additionally deliberate in Vivekarama, Thuppawela, Godella, Siriparakum Mawatha, Balagama, Danduthota and Kotikawatta.
The overall value of the mission is Rs. 15 billion. It’s being deliberate and applied by the Sri Lanka Land Improvement Company below the route of the Ministry of Transport, Highways and City Improvement.
Together with the flood-control work, enhancements shall be made to principal and rural street networks, small bridges, culverts and stormwater drainage methods.
Strolling paths and entry roads may also be developed, whereas a tree-planting programme shall be carried out as a part of the broader environmental enchancment work.
The sphere inspection was additionally attended by Danushka Priyadarshana, Chairman of the Kotikawatta–Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha; Eng. Saman S. Senaweera, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Land Improvement Company; and different officers representing authorities establishments.
