A brand new pilot undertaking to cut back plastic air pollution in Colombo’s waterways was launched yesterday (November 7) at Lake Drive, Parliament Street in Nawala, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.
The undertaking introduces the “Plastic Loop” system, designed to entice plastic and polythene waste floating by the town’s canal networks.
The initiative is a part of the Clear Sri Lanka Initiative and is funded by the South Asia Co-operative Setting Programme (SACEP) beneath the PLEASE Challenge. The undertaking is being applied by the Negombo Recycle Membership.
Talking on the occasion, the Deputy Common Supervisor of the Negombo Recycle Membership stated this system can be prolonged to 14 essential canals and interconnected waterways throughout Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Kaduwela, and Kolonnawa.
In whole, 22 plastic loop crash boundaries can be put in at key areas, together with Lake Drive in Nawala and the Kirulapone canal, to gather plastic waste earlier than it reaches the ocean.
All collected plastic and polythene can be recycled as a part of the undertaking’s sustainability objectives. Officers defined that plastic waste has been a serious reason for blockages in Colombo’s canal techniques, significantly throughout heavy rainfall, resulting in flooding and environmental injury.
The pilot launch was attended by Setting Minister Dammika Patabendi, Deputy Minister of City Growth Eranga Gunasekara, Deputy Minister of Public Safety and Parliamentary Affairs Sunil Watagala, Deputy Minister of Setting Anton Jayakody, and the Mayor of Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Arosha Athapattu, together with a number of different officers.
Authorities expressed hope that the Plastic Loop system will function a long-term answer to cut back plastic air pollution and enhance water circulate in Colombo’s canal community.
