In nearly forty minutes by practice from Kyoto Station, the Mangetsu-ji Temple Uki-mido is a singular, historic treasure sitting gallantly on the shores of Lake Biwa. The temple can also be referred to as the Floating Pavilion and belongs to the Daitoku-ji sect of Buddhism. It boasts a definite structure, using strengthened concrete stilts set into the water for assist.

The positioning has attracted photographers, artists, and poets, together with the legendary Matsuo Basho and Ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige Utagawa. The temple is popularly related to the scene “Wild geese returning dwelling at Katata” from the “Eight Views of Omi,” typically depicted in Japanese artwork and poetry. The temple dates again to the Heian Interval, when the monk Genshin noticed a vivid mild in Lake Biwa from the highest of Mount Hiei. He descended to the lake, forged a internet into the waters and scooped a glowing golden statue of Amida Buddha. As a homage, he carved a thousand Buddha statues and erected the temple to shelter them. The non secular web site has been a sanctuary for security on the lake, particularly for fishermen.
