What JETP means for the state and for Singapore

SINGAPORE: On social media, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong shared a heartfelt message marking Complete Defence Day—commemorating the city-state’s give up to Japanese forces in 1942, a fall that put the Lion Metropolis into its darkest moments.

The Prime Minister recalled the sufferings that the nation had endured throughout these painful years, and the way these hardships left a permanent lesson that Singaporeans are the ‘masters of their very own future.’

“We could also be a small nation. However our energy has by no means been in numbers alone. It’s in our collective will and resolve to guard our residence and our lifestyle… Allow us to stand collectively — steadfast and united — to maintain Singapore secure and safe for generations to come back,” Prime Minister Wong concluded.

Netizens expressed their ideas and opinions on the mentioned submit. One netizen remarked: “Allow us to concentrate on commemorating this present day, and with out our forefathers doing their finest to endure and survived/sacrificed through the Japanese Occupation, we might not be what we are actually. Thanks to all of the patriots and our pioneers for what you all have contributed to us.”

One other netizen acknowledged: “We must always always remember what has occurred in historical past and thus be glad about what we’ve proper now …We will construct our energy and braveness to maneuver ahead and have a greater future.”

The nation held a memorial ceremony on Sunday, Feb 15, to honour the individuals who died through the Japanese occupation in World Battle II. With this, an estimated variety of 500 individuals attended the occasion within the metropolis centre.

This commemoration occasion was organised by the Singapore Chinese language Chamber of Commerce and Business and the Central Nationwide Schooling Workplace of the Ministry of Protection.

In a speech through the occasion, Singapore’s Schooling Minister Desmond Lee declared: “It was a time of super hardship and struggling…We can’t, we should not, and we is not going to neglect this painful historical past.”

The Historical past

Singapore fell to the invading Japanese military on February 15, 1942, marking the beginning of greater than three years of their occupation. In response to analysis, at the very least 50,000 Chinese language Singaporeans have been killed by the Japanese forces again then.

Moreover, on February 15, 1967, Singapore established the  Civilian Battle Memorial and designated the date as Complete Defence Day, to recollect the historic and life-changing time. Ever since, the annual remembrance ceremonies have been held on the memorial each February 15.
