Kolkata: The Calcutta Excessive Court docket has cancelled the leaves of civil judges and magistrates to urgently clear over six million pending instances associated to unmapped voters and discrepancies in West Bengal’s electoral roll, after the Supreme Court docket of India allowed it to deploy further judicial officers following considerations raised by the Election Fee of India concerning the scale of the backlog.

The state may have round 1,000 – 1,200 judicial officers to adjudicate the instances in time,” mentioned a senior official of EC in Kolkata.

In an unprecedented transfer, the Supreme Court docket on Tuesday authorised the chief justice of the Calcutta excessive court docket to attract further judicial manpower to finish the train “on a conflict footing”. Aside from civil judges (senior and junior division) with no less than three years’ expertise, the chief justice has been permitted to strategy the chief justices of the Jharkhand and Orissa Excessive Courts to spare serving and retired judicial officers.

Hours after the Supreme Court docket’s order, the Calcutta excessive court docket cancelled all leaves of civil Choose (senior division), Chief Judicial Magistrates, Extra Chief Judicial Justice of the Peace and Civil Judges (Junior Division) and Judicial Justice of the Peace, together with these posted on deputation until additional orders. These on pre-approved depart have been directed to hitch obligation from Wednesday.

“Whereas the ultimate electoral roll might be revealed on February 28, as per the apex court docket’s orders, supplementary rolls comprising names of voters disposed of by the judicial officers might be revealed even after the EC broadcasts the election dates. Supplementary lists could also be revealed till the final day of nomination and people voters whose names are within the last roll or within the supplementary rolls might be eligible to forged their vote,” mentioned the official.
