Three Chinese language nationals have been arrested by Customs officers at Bandaranaike Worldwide Airport (BIA), Katunayake, after being present in possession of a big consignment of cell phones and batteries allegedly smuggled into Sri Lanka, officers mentioned.
The suspects had been intercepted yesterday (Could 19) whereas trying to exit by way of the “Inexperienced Channel” on the arrival terminal.
The group had arrived in Sri Lanka from Shanghai, China.
Customs officers turned suspicious after one male passenger entered the Inexperienced Channel carrying a black polythene bag obtained from duty-free packaging.
Upon inspection, officers found a cell phone hidden amongst goodies and confectionery objects.
Customs officers additional said that the remaining cell phones and batteries had been hidden in a specifically designed jacket beneath his garments, within the socks of a feminine passenger who adopted him, and within the baggage of the third suspect.
In complete, 87 cell phones and 140 batteries, valued at roughly Rs. 5.14 million, had been recovered.
