Numerous Sri Lanka’s palm-leaf manuscripts, which protect the nation’s Buddhist, historic, medical, astrological and cultural heritage, are reportedly liable to deterioration.

Conservation consultants say the manuscripts, notably these housed in historical temples positioned in coastal areas, are deteriorating quickly because of the saline atmospheric circumstances.

It is usually reported that one other main problem is the shortage of expert craftsmen with the standard information required to supply the resin oil important for the preservation of palm-leaf manuscripts.

No nationwide survey since 1952

The final nationwide survey of Sri Lanka’s palm-leaf manuscripts was carried out in 1952, and no official nationwide replace of the nation’s manuscript collections has been carried out since then.

Researchers subsequently consider {that a} important variety of uncommon and undocumented palm-leaf manuscripts should still be held in temples, non-public collections and different places throughout the nation.

In the meantime, it’s reported that palm-leaf manuscripts at 14 temples have now been conserved beneath a preservation programme launched to coincide with the a hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Panadura Debate.

The programme was carried out with monetary help from the Bauddhaloka Basis and technical assist from the Nationwide Library and Documentation Companies Board.

The conserved manuscripts have been returned to a number of temples, together with Dodanduwa Kumarakanda Kumara Maha Viharaya, Dodanduwa Shailabimbaramaya, Sri Paramananda Rajamaha Viharaya in Galle, Parama Vichithrananda Viharaya in Galle, and Sri Saddharmakara Pirivena at Pinwatta, Panadura.

Throughout the conservation course of, consultants recognized a lot of uncommon historic manuscripts, together with the almost 600-year-old Kavimini Namawaliya, a Pali grammar manuscript written by the Venerable Migettuwatte Gunananda Thera throughout his novice monkhood, and a doc relationship again to 1808 referring to the conferment of upper ordination (Upasampadā) from Burma, together with a number of different traditionally important information.
