As of right now, 21 events have filed petitions earlier than the Supreme Courtroom opposing the twenty second Constitutional Modification Invoice.

The petitions have been filed in search of a declaration that the Invoice constitutes an abuse of the Structure on the grounds that it undermines the independence of the judiciary and the rule of legislation, and that the Invoice is inconsistent with the Structure. Additionally they search an order directing that the Invoice be submitted to a referendum for approval.

New petitions have been filed by Transparency Basis Treasurer Sunil Jayasundara, Dr Ajanta Perera, Bar Affiliation of Sri Lanka President, Legal professional-at-Regulation Rajeev Amarasuriya, Provincial Councillor and Legal professional-at-Regulation Shiraz Lakthilaka, Professor Arjuna Parakrama, and the Younger Legal professionals’ Affiliation.

Beforehand, petitions have been filed by the Bar Affiliation of Sri Lanka, Legal professional-at-Regulation Maithree Gunaratne, Chairman of the Unbiased Legal professionals’ Organisation, Professor G.L. Peiris, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Sarvajana Balaya, former Minister Udaya Gammanpila, Dr Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu, Frontline Socialist Social gathering Propaganda Secretary Duminda Nagamuwa, and Milinda Rajapaksa.

The Legal professional Normal has been named because the respondent in these petitions.

The petitions filed state as follows:

A Invoice titled the twenty second Constitutional Modification Invoice has been included within the Order Paper of Parliament.

Clause 2 of the Invoice proposes extending the retirement age of a Supreme Courtroom decide to 67 and the retirement age of Courtroom of Enchantment judges to 65.

As well as, Clause 3 of the Invoice proposes growing the variety of judges of the Courtroom of Enchantment to 25.

These two provisions will undermine the independence of the judiciary.
