
A particular committee has been appointed on the directions of Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to overview and replace the principles, laws and standing orders underneath the Prisons Ordinance.
The committee was appointed yesterday (October 8, 2026), following a particular dialogue held that afternoon between President Dissanayake and the Maha Sangha representing the three Buddhist Nikayas.
The committee consists of 5 members:
- Prince Senadheera, Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Spiritual and Cultural Affairs.
- Piyumanthi Peiris, Further Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and Nationwide Integration.
- Wasantha Ariyarathna, Further Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Native Authorities.
- R.M.G. Senarathna, Commissioner-Basic of Buddhist Affairs.
- A.C. Gajanayake, Commissioner of the Division of Prisons.
The committee has been appointed to overview present jail guidelines and standing orders and advocate modifications to satisfy present spiritual, cultural, authorized, administrative and sensible wants.
It has additionally been tasked with figuring out amendments required to enhance effectivity, good governance and safety throughout the jail system whereas defending cultural values and upholding the rule of legislation.
The committee will submit suggestions on the mandatory amendments to the present guidelines, laws and standing orders.
