College of Tsukuba professor emeritus Hideki Shirakawa, who gained the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000 for growing conductive polymers, died of a metastatic liver tumor and most cancers at a hospital in Yokohama on Aug. 24. He was 90.
A Tokyo native, Shirakawa graduated from the science college on the Tokyo Institute of Expertise, now the Institute of Science Tokyo, in 1961.
