The Israeli-American Council is looking for the rapper Macklemore to be dropped from the opening slot on pop star Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour for chanting “Free Palestine” and accusing Israel of apartheid and genocide throughout his performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday and Saturday nights.

Identified for such hits as “Thrift Store” and “Identical Love,” the rapper’s anti-Israel monologue on the performances preceded his 2024 track, “Hind’s Corridor,” referring to Columbia College’s Hamilton Corridor, which pro-Palestinian protesters occupied and unofficially renamed for Hind Rajab, a 6-year-old Palestinian woman who was killed in the course of the struggle in Gaza.

“I had needed to face up right here on levels and stadiums throughout America and say two phrases which can be very close to and pricey to my coronary heart, ‘Free Palestine’,” he mentioned on the present he opened for Ed Sheeran Saturday evening, in accordance with movies posted from the live shows. “I need these phrases to be loud and clear so the folks from Gaza all the way in which to the occupied West Financial institution know that we’ve got their again and that we’ve got not forgotten them.”

He went on to dedicate the track to “the bravery of Columbia College college students, the encampment motion that mobilized the whole world.”

“Ed Sheeran – don’t enable your stage for use to divide folks or unfold one-sided political propaganda,” IAC mentioned, circulating a petition demanding Macklemore be taken off the invoice for his  remaining 9 dates of the tour.

Messages left for representatives of Macklemore, Ed Sheeran and the live performance promoters AEG and the Messina Group weren’t returned.

Macklemore addressed the Jewish group immediately throughout his appearances, saying, “To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters: Criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being in opposition to genocide by no means is criticism of you. My message is for peace, love and for all human beings to be handled with dignity, respect and equality.”

The reactions to Macklemore’s remarks have been removed from unanimous. Some followers took to social media to reward him.

Macklemore has been talking out in opposition to Israel’s conduct of the struggle in Gaza since late October 2023. He was one of many first of 55 performers to signal the Artists4CeaseFire open letter to then-President Joe Biden calling for a everlasting ceasefire, the discharge of all hostages and the supply of lifesaving support to civilians in Gaza.
