A suspect has been arrested over the alleged unlawful switch of USD 80 million, equal to greater than Rs. 23 billion, from Sri Lanka to overseas accounts between 2023 and 2025.
The suspect, a resident of the Maradana space, was arrested yesterday (September 9, 2026) by the Police Monetary Crimes Investigation Division (FCID).
The investigation was launched following a criticism lodged by Sri Lanka Customs relating to a number of firms suspected of sending cash abroad by falsely claiming that they had been importing items from overseas nations.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly transferred the cash out of Sri Lanka between January 1, 2023 and November 21, 2025.
In line with investigators, a complete of USD 80 million had been transferred on 3,198 events by means of six state and personal banks.
The transactions had been allegedly carried out utilizing the names of 26 firms by means of Telegraphic Transfers (TT).
Additional investigations into the alleged monetary fraud are being carried out by the FCID.
