A 41-year-old suspect who seized a police firearm, shot and injured an officer and fled on a stolen bike in Katunayake has been arrested with 31 grams of “Ice” medicine in Divulapitiya.

The incident started on the night of July 15, 2026, when officers connected to the Visitors Division of the Katunayake Police Station signalled a bike to cease for an inspection.

The rider ignored the sign and continued with out stopping. Suspecting that the bike might have been related to a criminal offense, two site visitors law enforcement officials pursued it.

When the bike reached the Dewamottawa space inside the Katunayake Police Division, the rider and the pillion passenger deserted it and fled on foot.

The officers chased the suspects and arrested one among them. The suspect was positioned below the guard of 1 police officer, whereas the opposite officer went to examine the deserted bike.

The suspect then used pressure towards the armed officer, struggled with him and assaulted him. Throughout the battle, he seized the firearm carried by the officer.

Cops stationed at a close-by roadblock grew to become conscious of the incident, and one among them arrived on the scene.

The suspect opened fireplace on the arriving officer, injuring him. He then threatened folks with the firearm, hijacked a bike travelling alongside the street and fled the realm with the police weapon.

A number of police groups later launched particular operations to arrest the suspects.

A staff from the Negombo Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau arrested the suspect who carried out the capturing within the Divulapitiya space.

Police mentioned 31 grams of “Ice” medicine had been present in his possession. The firearm seized from the police officer and the hijacked bike had been additionally recovered and brought into police custody.

The arrested suspect is a 41-year-old resident of the Divulapitiya space.

Investigations have additionally revealed that he served within the Civil Safety Division from 2008 to 2010 whereas connected to the Katunayake City Safety Unit.

The police officer who suffered gunshot accidents was admitted to the Negombo Hospital, whereas the officer injured within the assault was admitted to the Minuwangoda Hospital.

Additional investigations are persevering with to arrest the opposite suspect.
