New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI): Globally, about 34.4 million further medical doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, and pharmacists are wanted to realize average common well being protection, with the biggest shortages in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, a worldwide research revealed in The Lancet Public Well being journal has estimated.

India has a ratio of about 73 well being employees per 10,000 inhabitants — 10.5 medical doctors per 10,000 inhabitants, 10.8 nurses per 10,000 inhabitants, 8.1 pharmacists and pharmaceutical assistants per 10,000 inhabitants and 1.2 midwifery personnel per 10,000 inhabitants.

Researchers from the Institute for Well being Metrics and Analysis on the College of Washington, US, estimated China to have a ratio of about 130 well being employees per 10,000 inhabitants — over 30 medical doctors per 10,000 inhabitants and about 45 nurses per 10,000 inhabitants.

The evaluation additionally discovered that world well being workforce almost tripled between 1990 and 2023 — from 40.9 million to 122.1 million employees — with ladies accounting for greater than 70 per cent of the expansion and representing about 70 per cent of all well being employees in 2023.

Area-wise, the best densities of group well being employees have been concentrated in south Asia (13.6 per 10,000 inhabitants), southeast Asia, east Asia, and Oceania (13.5 per 10,000 inhabitants), Latin America and the Caribbean (10.8 per 10,000 inhabitants) and sub-Saharan Africa (10.1 per 10,000 inhabitants), the evaluation discovered.
