Pallatt Brahmadathan, a 65-year-old elephant and a well-known presence at temple festivals throughout Keralam, died after being struck by lightning amid heavy rain close to Erattupetta in Kottayam on Sunday night.
The incident occurred round 5.30 p.m. when a thunderstorm swept by means of the world. The practically 10-foot-tall elephant was tethered close to the residence of his proprietor, Kerala Pageant Coordination Committee president Rajesh Pallatt, at Melampara. He had been resting there following a bout of musth.
Brahmadathan, who had been dropped at Keralam from Bihar, was a well-liked attraction amongst elephant lovers. He was among the many elephants that carried the idol of the primary deity throughout the late-night Pooram procession of Paramekkavu Devaswom on the Thrissur Pooram.
Recognized for his calm and mild nature, Brahmadathan was fondly referred to by elephant lovers as Gaja Kausthubham Pallatt Brahmadathan.
